--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- excerpts (divided by book) - THE FOG SHE SAW “We’re all here. Always. Two feet on Earth, your eyes in this one. We work behind the scenes,” the girl continued to explain, “and when something goes wrong,” she opened one previously closed eye, “it is our duty to find the source and sort it out.” - FIRE AND ROSE “The ball tonight is quite lovely,” she commented, slyly studying their face to search for any resemblance. That was always a fun game of hers. “Of course it is,” they replied, their blond, mulleted hair spilling across their face, grinning drunkenly. Sighing softly like some lovesick damsel - another one of her games - she said sweetly, “Of course, it could be much better. . .” The man leaned closer, his breath smelling sickeningly of damp liquor. “I have a nice bedroom upstairs if you’d like to have a little fun, sweetie.” She coughed, considering stabbing someone to lighten the mood. “I apologise, but I’m taken. . .” “All the best ones are, dearie,” he said, leaning in to kiss her on the cheek. “You sure about the alone time?” She leaned away, flashing him one of her cold smiles. “Please, I mustn't.” And with that, she turned away sharply, smiling to herself and whipping him in the face with her pinned-up hair in the back of her head. - FIRE AND ROSE Her mother often spoke of God’s hand in her daughter’s life and how she must trust in Him to sort out her problems. Being very long dead, God of course had no such influence in anyone’s life and anyone who may have taken 'His' place firmly believed in not meddling - or did it in such a way that it made no difference and simply amused the meddler. This led to a multitude of problems piling up around the strictly Amish family, though, as it was always with their devout trust in a very dead being (Her Replacement also in no way inclined to assist them), they ignored them. She at least had some bit of sense within her, and being a stubborn thirteen-year-old with little to no substantial impact upon the world no matter the magnitude of her actions, she took her scepticism to silently burning crosses and bibles that her family kept around the place - an action that may or may not be inherently ingrained in all Witches. Being of infinite potential and knowledge or not, teenagers are teenagers. - FIRE AND ROSE The mail-person was strange looking, hovering absently in front of the doorstep. The door creaked open, and they stood up straighter, alert. “Hi,” they said cheerfully as a woman peered out. She wore a white cap and an ankle-length, loose dress, which seemed rather old and worn, as though it had been passed down multiple times. Frowning, she asked, “Giulia?” “Who?” the mail-person said, notching an eyebrow as they switched the thin package from under one arm to the other. “Sorry,” the woman said, shaking her head while she pinched the bridge of her nose with her thumb and forefinger. She seemed a tad confused, which was generally something that happened around this particular mail-person. “I mistook you for my daughter. Er - do you need something?” “Well, I’m delivering this,” they said, offering up the package helpfully. “This is the right address, isn’t it?” The woman peeked at the package label. It was. “I’m sorry, I don’t think you’re supposed to be here,” she replied, and, unsure of what to do, her brain muddled, she shut the door in their face. They shrugged and turned away. People could be strange - especially when you mistakenly delivered a Satanic Package to them. But the woman had piqued their curiosity, so it wasn’t entirely a useless trip. “Who was it that I looked like again?” - SHATTERED STARS (next chapter sneak peek) “So you’re the new one, are you?” he said, eyeing Salah with a cold cruelty that made her shudder. Kage grinned, his eyes empty. “She’s young, isn’t she? Youngest yet?” His eyes were still on Salah, who looked rather uncomfortable, but he addressed Death. The God shook her head slowly, somehow looking at him with an icier gaze than his own. It nearly made him shudder, and he never so much as twitched when someone looked at him. A true and trained villain, that one. Knows she’s in control, and not willing to relent it. He could do better. He’d be surprised at those in near-true control. - THE TEASHOP IN THE CLOUDS “Honey, I’m neither cruel nor kind.” They smiled, and it had a saccharine tinge. “Just good at my job.” And with a grin and a wave, they were gone to leave her shaking.
