Hello Internet, welcome to FOOD THEORY! Today, we are going to spill the secrets on soda. Theorists, am I the only one who though diet meant caffeine free as a kid? I don't know, I just always assumed that. But that's besides the point. Today we are diving into the question, is diet the healthiest soda? If not, should I be buying Coke light now or something? To begin, let's start with the difference between normal Coke (my soda of choice for today) Diet Coke, Coke Light, and Coke Zero. As a sweetener, Coke contains your general sugar. However, Diet Coke contains artificial sweeteners such as aspartame. And if you have no clue what that is, neither did I so here is an explanation. It is a low calorie sweetener commonly sold as NutraSweet. Now when you look up aspartame, you are immediately greeted with health warnings. Off to a bad start diet soda. It has been linked to mental problems such as depression, memory loss, migraines, insomnia, seizures, and brain damage. So much so that the FDA had to release a warning about too much consumption causing these problems. However, it won't spike insulin levels, which is a common reason for drinking. But, and this is a big but, it still causes weight gain, and may even lead to a higher likelihood of diabetes. Now let's compare that normal coke. Too much sugar intake can cause diabetes, weight gain, high blood pressure, and a higher chance of a heart attack, along with the dreaded sugar crash. So if diet soda still causes health problems, and sugar is linked to diabetes, than how am I supposed to get my sweet coca cola? Well enter Coke Zero sugar. While both are still sweetened with aspartame, it is much less than diet and has no calories too. Coke light is an option too, but is used with different blend of sweeteners. In the end, the most health forward choice out of these four has to be Coke Zero Sugar. Now, this isn't for taste, that will always be Diet Coke for me. But hey, that's just a theory, a FOOD THEORY! Thanks for reading.
