"Well looky here who showed up to the doorstep! Sage come're!" Clem called out. She nodded towards the garden for Sam and Jess to let them know I was there. When they arrive they walk towards me as if to say something but I say before them, "I thought I was invisible" and they give me puzzled looks. "Such friends you are. You don't act like any friend if I've ever seen one." A long pause. I hate it when that happens. And then in her sassy voice Jess said, "Fine if you don't want to be in our friend group. We'll just take off and leave. Start a second life. Without you." I can feel it. The temper was starting to rise. "Well, I could roast you, but my mom says I shouldn't burn trash." I call back, and stomp away farther into the field while the girls go back in the kitchen. For the rest of the livelong day I poke out grass blades that sway in the wind like it did. Each one represented a stab in the heart. Letting me know I have no real friends. I was going to go inside 'cause I've been bitten so many times but then I felt Clem coming out of the house and I couldn't look at her. Maybe Sam and Jess told her what I have done. So I continued to stare at the grass and the trees while still feeling Clem looking at me from behind. The silence hit me hard. I turned around. Nobody was there.
