It was dark when it happened. About... ten o'clock at night. I was sitting in the living room, doing my homework on the floor, just in case. I hadn't told my parents about my power, so I thought it was wise to NOT risk falling through the couch in case they got home early from their date. My ability comes and goes. I can't really control it YET, but I think it works best when I'm afraid or angry. I finished my homework and set it down beside me, getting a remote and flipping on the TV. While the news was going, I made myself a grilled cheese sandwich. When I finished making it, I put it on a plate and sat back down on the kitchen floor, eyes glued to the screen. "A devastating car crash just a half hour ago was reported." The news lady said. A picture of a smashed up car popped up on the screen. It was dark, so I couldn't see much of what the car looked like besides the fact it was destroyed. "Police report the two people in the car died in critical condition. The car appeared to have fallen off a small cliff. The person who reported the accident was driving back to their home in a town named Woodson." I remember raising my eyebrows in disbelief. That was MY town. "That's all there is for tonight, this is Marcy Jones." The lady said. Just then there was a knock on the door. I wiped my fingers and started for the door. I opened it slowly, looking up at whoever was at the door. A woman with brown hair and blue eyes looked down at me. "Are you Evelyn Haynes?" She asked. I blinked, my heart starting to beat a little faster. "Yes. Why?" My breath stopped when I saw the police badge on her uniform. I looked past her and saw a police car with flashing lights. I started to feel a little light headed. Two people... car crash... died. Why else would a police officer come to my house asking for my name? "Are you alright?" The woman asked, reaching to put a hand on my shoulder. To my dismay, it went right through me. The officer blinked, drawing her hand away. She shook her head slightly, as if trying to convince herself it didn't happen. Luckily, she succeeded. "Listen, I need to tell you something, okay?" She said. I nodded. "You're parents... were involved in a terrible accident. I'm sorry, but... they're not coming home." Even though I had suspected it from the very beginning, my heart dropped, and I dropped too, right there on the floor. I never got to tell them. The woman crouched down. "Evelyn, I'm so sorry. I need you to come to the police station, okay?" She said. Remember when I told you my power worked best when I'm scared or mad? I forgot to mention sad. Devastated. Terrified. Doomed. That was the day my power was at its very strongest, because I became so transparent... I became invisible long enough to run.
