Mr. Derek Shell was the band director at Lakewood for 5th through 12th grade. When we heard the news we were heartbroken. Mr. Shell leaving was like losing a family member. For those who aren't in band, band is much more than a class. Band is like having a separate family, like having a huge group of friends. The band director is the worst person to lose. Mr. Shell was kind and funny, and I always had a great time with him. It's terrible having to see someone like him leave such a great group of kids.
