It quickly developed, becoming Tropical Storm Alexis by the next day. The OHC (Oat Hurricane Center) forecasted the storm to head towards the coastal city of Cape Wells, before turning to the north and therefore saving the city from impacts any worse than squally weather as it passed by as a high-end Category 1 hurricane. However, the storm continued moving toward the city, catching residents off guard. It also began rapidly intensifying, going from a 75 mph storm at 8:00 am local time on September 9 to a 115 mph major hurricane at the same time the next day. Alexis made landfall at peak intensity on the evening of September 10, near Cape Wells. It created a storm surge of 10 feet in some places, much more than the 6 feet forecasted by the OHC. This flooded most of the city's downtown, dealing major damage and a peak wind gust of 107 mph. The system dissipated the next day, after rapidly weakening due to the mountainous terrain in the area.
