Writing: Gardening Should be a Class in School Imagine a room filled to the brim with plants. You can hear the plants being watered by the irrigation pipes. This same room is the one many schools don't have. Gardening should be included as a class during school; it has many benefits such as helping you eat healthier, reducing stress, and saving money. Starting a garden and growing plants can help you eat healthier. When you grow your own food, you start to eat the vegetables you grow. A study by Beneden Hospital found that households that grow their own vegetables and fruit consume 40% more fruits and vegetables per day than those who don't. "Backyard gardening can inspire you to take an interest in the origins of your food and make better choices about what you put on your plate," says Dr. Helen Delichatois, "when you grow your own food, you savor it more because of the effort it took to get to the table." Gardening has been shown to reduce stress. Stress is currently taking a toll on over 80% of U. S students. If gardening is added as a class in schools, it could help lower this percentage. It has been shown that it can reduce the amount of cortisol you produce. Cortisol is a hormone that you produce when you are stressed. Gardening helps with mindfulness, which is a form of meditation. It is a fact that meditation helps to calm the body and mind. When the body is calmed it stops producing Cortisol. "Just for one's health ... it is very necessary to work in the garden and to see the flowers growing." Once said by Vincent Van Goh. Some people might think gardening is expensive. But, this has been proven wrong. Just an average backyard garden produces fresh produce worth over $600. An average grocery run for fresh produce could be over $100! Growing your own fresh produce could help lower these costs. Fresh herbs are also becoming quite expensive; when you buy a herb plant it could be just $8 which is quite cheap compared to fresh herbs. The materials to start a garden are around $100, so gardening can be very profitable. Gardening is beneficial in helping students stay physically and mentally healthy. A Gardening class can help students perform better in school and when they grow up to be adults. So, let's make gardening classes Nationwide wide by starting in Georgia!
