When The Earth Quaked ~ A Message in a Bottle Hello. My name is Hannah, I am 15 years old, and I used to live in the small town of New Madrid, Missouri. The date is February 20th, 1812. It's a wonder that my family and I are still alive. The ground has been shaking constantly since December, some so large that the ground has crumpled beneath people's feet. My town has been destroyed, as the Mississippi River took over, flooding the whole town. We don't know how many people made it out, but we already know that not everyone did. My family doesn't know what we are going to do now, as we lost everything, but the clothes off our backs. The earthquakes that took our home, we heard have done a lot more. Sailors say that there were whirlpools in the water, islands that had been there just the night before vanished, and some even say that the river ran backwards! We know our town was not the only one destroyed, as we have met people from towns such as Point Pleasent and Little Prairie say their towns have also been destroyed. I would have never thought that something like this could have happened, some say that God is angry and has come to destroy us all, while others say that it was the comet that had flown over our heads just months before. I don't know what it is, but I don't think I will ever forget the constant shaking beneath my feet, the lurking danger at all times. Maybe when I get old enough, I'll move from here. This place, something is here. Something caused this to happen. I'm scared it will happen again. I don't want to fear for my life on a normal day, live under the fear that the ground will shake, and the river will take my town. I don't know if this will reach anyone. I'm standing over the site where New Madrid was, now it is the Mississippi River. I'm going to put this in the bottle, and toss it into the River, the mighty River that took my town when the earth quaked.
This was written for the November 5th Daily. The message in the bottle prompt. I wrote about a girl who survived the New Madrid Earthquakes of 1811 and 1812. This is Hi-Fi, because Hannah is fake, but the Earthquakes were very real. Enjoy!
