And he was going to pay with blood. Revenge hung in the air heavily as I laced up my boots, getting ready to head out. I brushed my hair back, pulling the hood of my hoodie up to conceal my face - and also to provide myself with some shelter from the frenzied rain. As I opened the door, I was met with the sight of sheets of rain pounding onto the ground relentlessly, creating an endless cacophony of sounds. I ventured bravely into the rain - I had to get this done, no matter what. And nothing was going to stop me. Nothing. I gripped the handle of the knife in my hand, gripped it so hard that my knuckles bleached to a pale white. My boots thudded on the sidewalk. I passed house after house, then turned a corner at the end of the cobbled street. When I came back, my hands would be streaked with his blood. I would make sure of it. At last, I spotted a familiar silhouette: the defined shoulders, tall, lanky gait as he made his way down the pavement. A smirk curled my lips. I quickened my pace. Soon, I was a mere metre away from him - and still, he remained blissfully oblivious. Then, in a swift, fluid motion, I struck the back of his head with the hilt of my knife, causing a sharp cry of pain to slip from his parted lips. The fear in his eyes when he turned, when he saw me...the pleasure of revenge reared inside of me like a snake, delighted at the sight of its prey. "Elise?" "Yes," I answered, smiling wickedly before I got ready for the final blow. He scampered away, now on all fours. Pitiful. "Please," he begged, pleaded. "Please, Elise, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to do it, you know I didn't." "Begging won't help you, Jake." I lowered my voice to a soft, dangerous whisper. "You'll pay. It's only fair." I paused, watching his chest heave with fear. "It's a life for a life." I drove the glinting tip of the knife into his stomach, and a guttural noise spurted from his throat, before he crumpled to the ground. Then lay still. His glassy eyes stared up at the sky, frozen with unspoken fear. I looked heavenward and laughed, feeling the cold rain on my skin. Revenge was sweet as I turned and walked the other way.
