I got ready for the curtains to open. Beyond the red velvet, I could hear the murmurs of the crowd, sweeping across the theatre. No doubt they would be comparing me to the previous act, but oh well. I fidgeted in my blue satin dress, feeling the starchy fabric scratch against my skin. My heart hammered in my chest, and I blew out a shaky breath to steady my nerves. Then the curtains swung open, and I stepped into the blaring spotlights, soaking in the giant audience. I took my place in front of the mic, getting ready to let the lyrics pour out of my mouth. The music started and I readied myself. My eyes scanned the crowd, taking in the expectant faces. Then they fixed onto a pair of stark blue eyes in the front row, and everything around me stopped. He was here. He was really here. Not just a figment of my imagination. Unwillingly, tears crept into my vision. He knew my gaze was on him, and he managed a weak, sad smile. He was the same - eyes blue like the raging ocean, brown hair mussed and disheveled like a crows nest. Sharp, beautiful features. Before I could think of what to do, I realised I was supposed to start. I strained my ears to listen to the music, waiting for the right moment. Then, I opened my mouth to sing, letting the notes waver in crescendos. When I finished, he was gone.
