Monarchflutter lay in her nest, staring up at the roof of the medicine den. She couldn't sleep. Her mind was on one cat; Sea-snakeshiver. A whisper of a smile was on her lips, her eyes full of stars. But a faint memory appeared in her mind as she was daydreaming. Her mama, telling her that if she was ever in love, to tell her. The whisper of the smile disappeared and was replaced with a solemn frown. Tears began to well up in her eyes. "Mama, I'm in love," she whispered. "You'd like him. He's kind, he's smart. Mama, I'm in love with Sea-snakeshiver." The words left her lips softly and quietly, no one could hear them but her. She sighed. Why was she even talking to Driftspirit? Her mama was gone. She'd never be seen again. Tears left her eyes, running down her face. Love was such an amazing yet devastating feeling. "I love you, mama. And I love Sea-snakeshiver," she whispered, one last time. "Goodbye, mama. Rest in peace." And just like that, it was real. Monarchflutter's mama's death, her love for Sea-snakeshiver, everything. It was all so real now. She brushed aside her tears. One promise she'd made had been kept. And that was enough for her.
