Chapter 8 Themes: Mentions of gun violence, slight gore Sara's Perspective We talked the entire time. She was an absolute delight, and she made me laugh several times, too. We covered several topics, including our favorite (and least favorite) school subjects, siblings, the Great Lakes, funny videos, and old trends. We had so much in common! Then the bell rang, signaling the end of lunch. "See you tomorrow!" Amelia said, smiling happily at me. Then she closed the boiler door behind her, finalizing our friendship. ā Sometimes, when I was bored, I would roam the darkened hallways of the school at night when no one was around. That way, nobody would scream if they felt me brush past them. Ah, memories. They came flooding back as I walked the old halls. The lockers where my friends and I played pranks on the bullies. The gym where I got my first kiss. The cafeteria where I started a rap battle with the popular boys. And then... I paused in the hallway that held the old classrooms. No one ever entered those classrooms anymore except during dares. The kids thought that's where I spent most of my time, but in fact, the exact opposite was true. It was too hard for me to walk that corridor. I floated through the door of the computer room, where the "incident" occurred. I could still see my horrified face, my screaming classmates, the wailing teacher, the screech of the announcements above telling us not to panic. It's hard to not panic when you're lying on the ground, your heart beating slower and slower every second, the sound of gunshots echoing in your brain. I could still see the puddle of red that the carpet had absorbed. It was almost invisible, but the memory was rooted in everyone's minds. Just like me.
