Chapter 9 Liam's Perspective The autumn wind hugged our stiff bodies as we walked home together. Despite the cold Wisconsin weather, Amelia smiled as she told me about her visit with Sara. I desperately tried to pay attention to what she was telling me, but I couldn't. It was impossible with the previous events of the day. "History repeats itself, doesn't it?" Joseph's cackling voice rattled my brain. I had to tell her. I couldn't risk her life like this for much longer. "Amelia," I interrupted. "What's up, Liam?" Amelia asked, turning to me. "I...need to tell you something," I sighed, nervous saliva gathering in my mouth. Amelia's smile fell from her face. "What is it?" "Joseph doesn't like that you're hanging out with Sara. You need to stop hanging out with her. Otherwise..." I let out a shuddering breath. I couldn't scare her to death. "You'll get bullied even more," I lied. "Why does he care who I'm hanging out with? He needs to focus on himself." Amelia rolled her eyes and readjusted her hairdo. I walked in front of her and grabbed her shoulders. "Because he has power. That's why, Amelia." I sighed and glanced at my feet before reclaiming my position by staring into Amelia's hazelnut brown eyes. "This isn't just some elementary school game. Listen, I don't know how they did it in California, but here in Wisconsin, when a bully tells you to do something, you do it. So I would recommend that you take my advice to heart and stop hanging out with Sara." Amelia stepped back from me and narrowed her eyes. "Wait a second. You're just doing this so you can spend more time with me! You lying little worm!" She shoved past me and stomped in the direction of her house. "Amelia! That's not how it is at all!" I hurried to catch up to her, but she sped up, trying to get away from me. Amelia climbed up her front steps and slammed the door before I could follow her inside. I was left standing on her front steps. I tried to convince myself that it wouldn't be my fault if she was killed, that it was pretty much su****e. But, of course, it was all my fault. For walking into her life. For harassing her so we could be friends. For telling her all about Sara and the "incident." If only I could be the one to die instead. Then I realized I could be. Author's note: Ooh, another cliffhanger! Thanks for reading and being patient with me! Love y'all! <3
