The booklet that Isabelle had been given was titled “Fairy Transportation” and explained how moving between the dimensions worked. Apparently there were “Portal Fairies” who could open tunnels to anywhere in the fairy world. But the only way for a fairy to go to the human world was with one of these magic booklets, which, as the princess had told Isabelle, could teleport anyone there and back. Humans could come to Milrale and become Flower Fairies if two things happened: first, they had to wish aloud to be a fairy, and second, they would have to truly be better off living in the fairy world. Isabelle was curious to see if the booklet really was magical, so she held it in both hands and whispered, “Take me to the human world.” A second later, her eyes closed. “Izzy? My mom says to tell you it’s time for lunch.” Isabelle opened her eyes and realized she was sitting on Mrs. Walker’s basement floor. Had the flower world really just been a dream? If so, it was strangely clear in her memory. But as she stood up, she realized the booklet was under her arm. “Izzy?” Kelsey poked her arm. “Let’s go upstairs. Mom’s making sandwiches. Do you want ham and cheese or peanut butter and jelly?” “Uh, ham and cheese please.” After lunch, Isabelle slipped back into the basement. She figured that was the best place to disappear again without anybody noticing. Once she stepped around the corner and grabbed the booklet, she didn’t waste a second. “Take me to Milrale.” Isabelle sat up inside the stem of her flower and looked above her. As she expected, all she saw was green, going up and up and up. At the top was something pink, but it was too far away for her to see clearly. Man, she really needed to learn to fly. She heard something that sounded like a leaf being crumpled up. Not knowing what it was, Isabelle ignored it. But when it came again, she realized someone was knocking on her flower stem. Isabelle peeled back the stem to reveal a fairy about her age, with pale green wings and an orange dress. The fairy stared around in wonder. “Wow, these flowers are even taller up close,” she sighed to herself. “Are you the Flower Fairy who just got here this morning?” “Um, yeah, I think so.” “Cool! I’m Lily, and I’ll be your Fairy Companion, and… what was that other thing I’m supposed to say?... Oh, yeah. I'm here to help you learn about Milrale and to help you to get used to fairy life. Questions or comments?” Finally! At last, someone who could tell her what everything meant. Isabelle didn’t hesitate. “How do I fly?” “Easy. Flap your wings.” Isabelle rolled her eyes. “Yeah, obviously, but how?” Lily shrugged. “I don’t know. What if someone asked you how to walk? Would you say, ‘Shift your weight onto one leg, lift the other slightly, lean forward, lower your raised leg to the ground, put your weight on it, lift your back leg, and so on’?” Isabelle smiled. “I guess that would be pretty ridiculous. You can’t tell toddlers how to walk, they have to figure it out themselves.” “Exactly.” Lily gestured like right on. “I can’t explain flying, you have to learn for yourself. By the way, I never got your name.” She paused expectantly. “Isabelle. Isabelle Cooper.” Lily instantly doubled over laughing. “You… have… two names!” she exclaimed between giggles. “Uh, all humans have a last name, so, yeah,” Isabelle informed her once she had composed herself. “Although, I’m not in the human world anymore, so just Isabelle actually.” “Fair enough,” Lily decided. “What else do you want to know?” Isabelle had so many questions about the fairy world, she wasn’t sure where to start. “How about… How many wing colors are there?” “What do you mean?” “Well, everybody around here has pink wings, but yours are green, and the princess’s are purple. So I was just wondering, you know, how many different colors they can be.” Isabelle clarified. “Oh.” Lily seemed happy to hear a question she could actually answer. “Well, Two-names, there are ten fairy types, and each has a different wing color. You’re a Flower Fairy, and I’m a Nature Fairy. And the Desert Fairies have orange, the Portal Fairies yellow, Water Fairies blue, Rock Fairies black, Mountain Fairies gray, Sky Fairies white, Light Fairies have prismatic wings, and, of course, the royal family and their relatives have purple. Oh, and by the way, when we talk about a fairy type as a whole, we just call them colors, since each fairy type’s wings are a different shade. You got all that?” “Hehe, sort of?” Isabelle’s head was spinning with all the names. “That’s fine, you’ll get it eventually. Want to take a walk?”
