Buddhist monks ring bells 108 times to expel bonno. 108という数字は人間の世俗的な欲「煩悩」の数です。お坊さんは鐘を108回鳴らすことで煩悩が消滅するように祈ります。 The bell is rung 107 times during New Year's Eve and one last time past midnight. （除夜の）鐘は大晦日に107回、0時を過ぎたときに一度鳴らされます。 It is customary for some people to visit their local temples to listen to the ringing of the Joya no Kane, or New Year Bell. 大晦日に地元のお寺を訪れて、除夜の鐘を聞くことを習慣にしている人は少なくありません。 Due to the new virus, many places in Japan have cancelled the event.
