All my life I had known, Lily Gray, she was of course my best friend. When we were fourteen, it fell apart. Now, we had known each other ‘cause our mama’s knew each other. We were born in the same hospital. I sat in the rain, all alone. The day acted as if it knew what was to happen. Lily came up to me with her yellow raincoat swallowing her whole. That’s what I had to imagine to get by. The day was so beautiful and sunny. ‘Til that monstrous Katrina came. Me and Lily hugged each other and promised not to let go no matter what. We held each others hands as we ran, fast as we could ‘out losing each other. We ran to her daddy’s old shed. We locked ourselves in. We watched out the window with fear. We struggled ourselves into the closet. We hugged each other so tightly, I’m surprised we didn’t suffocate ourselves. I woke up in a different shelter. People were caring for me. I looked around. I saw Lily Gray, I ran to that girl as fast as I could run at that time. I knew the ladies and men caring for me were orderin’ me to stay but didn’t care. I hugged Lily and she hugged me back. Sadly, she died while hugging me. All I have left of her is her ghost.
