Believe it or not, the ball went up into the air, and she knew that she had to start running the 90 feet, so she did. She was running and running, arrived at first base and thought, will I be able to make it to second base? The ball had gone into the corner, and the left fielder was not able to get it. Yeah, she thought. I have enough time. So she took off again, and was darting toward second base and the ball had just been retrieved by the left fielder, now being passed to the 3rd baseman. Run! Kelly ran with all her wits, and right when the ball had gotten to the 2nd baseman, she put her foot on the base. But no luck, the umpires had seen it differently, as they called it OUT. Kelly knew that the call couldn’t have been correct, but she knew from watching baseball, that the umpires sometimes made mistakes. This couldn’t have been a mistake, she thought, and everyone knew that she had been safe. Everyone except the umpires. Kelly ALSO knew that if a player tried to fight it though, that they usually got ejected from the game. And that would not have looked good for her debut, so she just (reluctantly) kept her mouth shut. Thankfully, Rosse had disagreed with the call as well, and called for it to be challenged. Rosse made the sign to challenge the call, and wanted it to be overturned. Would the umpires see the sign? Yes, they did, and the game stopped abruptly. The other team thought it hadn’t been fair, but of course, almost everything in baseball is fair/unfair. The umpires all gathered in a circle, awaiting from the people who were looking at the replay of the play, to see if Kelly was indeed safe. A few moments later, they were muttering something to one another, as if to discuss what the people who watched the replay had said. Soon after, one of the umpires turned to face the crowd, and announced: “the Chicago Cubs called a challenge at second base. That call is overturned, the runner is SAFE.” Everyone but the opposing team cheered, glad that the Cubs had a runner on base. Kelly was beaming with pride and excitement, as she stood on the base, looking up and around at the crowd. She never thought that she would get here, be in front of multiple cameras, and thousands of people. She looked over to see if she could find her friend Ian and Ellia in the roaring crowd, and after a few seconds, she saw them, sitting in the front seats, right next to the Cubs dugout. They were waving their arms like crazy, trying to get Kelly’s attention. Kelly wanted to wave back, but as soon as she lifted her hand to, the sound of the bat alerted her to start running again. She looked to see where the ball was, and noticed that the center fielder seemed like he was about to catch it but then he lost it in the sun. She knew this was her chance to make it to another base, and ran towards 3rd. She kept on running, and made it to 3rd with just enough time. Kelly scanned the field to see who was on base, and saw ______(Wisdom) on 1st. That was good, they just needed one more single to get a run. She was looking carefully at the batter, _____(Horner) to see what he would do, as the pitcher wound up and threw an 89 mph slider. Miraculously, ____(Hoerner) brought the ball way up high, and far enough to make it over the outfielders heads and into the stands. Home run by _____ (Horner)! Kelly ran to home plate, stepped on it, and waited for ______(Wisdom) and _______ (Horner) to reach the plate. When they arrived, the three of them high-fived each other and went back to the dugout. They were all high-fiving one another and congratulating ____(Horner) on the home run. Not only was the team happy about it, but the massive sea of people were yelling like crazy. Kelly turned to see them, and watched as Ian and Ellia were waving their hands up into the air and jumping up and down. She couldn’t help but smile at their reaction. It was so hopeful and enthusiastic.
