10 tips Shared: 2/20/23 Reshared: 3/19/23 Thumbnail by me made on canva :) TLDR at the very end - 1. Read: Reading will help you develop your writing skills. See what other authors are doing to keep you interested. If you enjoyed a book, try to re-read some parts and find out what specific words, or techniques an author is using. Also, don't only stick to your favorite genres. Try to explore if you can 2. Write every day: It doesn't matter if you're writing about how you won your soccer tournament, an essay for class, or a chapter of your fantasy novel. Try to write anything, just a little bit every day. I recommend taking a little journal with you, or using the memo app on your phone, to write down little ideas that strike you at random moments. 3. Productive distraction: Some things can help improve your creativity. A study has shown that taking a shower helps boost your imagination! You can also try going outside, playing a board game, taking a nap, exercising, or drinking some tea. 4. Use a prompt: You can use a prompt to help you get your creative water flowing! Something that helps me is a 3-words-story. You can use a word generator or ask some people for 3 random words. They could be about similar subjects or something totally unrelated to each other. Try to write a short story using those 3 words as the main topic. You can also use sentence prompts (two girls find an interesting diamond that is linked to a mystery, a dog learns how to speak, etc etc). You can find these online. 5. Write out of order: It's tempting sometimes to sit down and write all the chapters in perfect order. I like to think about separate chunks in the story, sometimes starting with the climax, or starting with the end and then moving forward. When writing my book, I planned out all the chapters, and then I just wrote them all out of order! I wrote whichever one I most felt like writing, but sometimes I wrote in order. You can also start writing multiple stories at once. As long as you don't get confused, it's perfectly ok. 6. Take ideas from your life: This is a fun idea. You can use scenarios from your real life to use in your book. Many authors do this. You can either take a little scenario from your life or base the entire story on something that happened to you, someone you know, or something you heard about on the news. This could even connect the reader to the character. 7. Have a daily journal: Keeping a daily journal encourages you to write daily (this goes with ). For example, you can keep a bullet journal, gratitude journal, poetry book, diary, dream journal, etc I have a dream journal its sooo much easier to remember your dreams (or nightmares...) that way. Highly recommend :) 8. Motivate yourself: Try to have a reason to write. For example, a reward, "once I finish writing this page, I'm gonna make a mug cake" (I did this xD) or, a deadline, "if I finish my book by the 1st of December, I will still have time to distribute copies as a Christmas gift for my family." 9. Just write: If you really want to write but don't know what about - put pen to paper and write whatever comes to mind. Absolutely anything. I tried this and a cool story idea came to me this way. 10. Take a break: Writing isn't your chore. Maybe you've been writing too much or thinking too much, or just being too pushy about writing. You can always take a break when needed. You never know when a cool idea is gonna come in :D - I bet you just skimmed through and didn't actually read the whole thing word for word LOL so, tl;dr Read more books. Try to write anything every day. Do something to get your brain flowing. Use a story prompt. Write chapters out of order. Take scenario ideas from life. Have a journal to write in daily. Motivate yourself to write with a deadline or reward. Just sit down and write whatever comes to mind. Take a break from writing.
