(click the green flag to begin the animation) when a massive star reaches the end of it's life, it runs out of nuclear fuel. no longer able to produce sufficient energy to maintain it's structure, it collapses under it's own gravity and explodes in a supernova. a black hole is what remains of the star, now nothing more than an infinitely dense object that consumes everything that ventures too close, not even light can escape it's grasp.
