Chinese new year, also called lunar new year, is a festival that celebrates the new year of the lunar calender. This year's zodiac animal is a rabbit. *NOTE: this story is just one variation of the zodiac story, i know there are different ones for different families* The story goes: Long ago, the Jade Emporer decided that the animals would have a race. The first 12 animals who finished would be awarded a year named after them. When the day came, all the animals got ready. The race started, and the animals all needed to cross a river. Because the cat and the rat were poor swimmers, they asked if they could climb onto the ox. The kind ox says yes. Right at the finish line, the rat jumps off the ox, pushes the cat into the river, and gets first place. The Jade Emporer awarded the first year to the rat. One by one, the animals finished the race. Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Boar. It was too late when the cat finally crawled out of the river. From then on, cats and rats were never friendly to each other. The cycle of zodiac animals continues, last year was the tiger, this year the rabbit, and next year the dragon. The year you were born in was a certain animal, and that is your zodiac (other than aries, virgo, cancer, etc.) I was born in the year of the tiger, my mom was a rabbit.
