The way we have depicted Spinosaurus has changed drastically throughout the ages. The more we discover about this strange pharaoh of the desert, the more interesting it gets. Timeline in a nutshell: 1915-1980s: Spinosaurus was described in 1915 and was often depicted as a generic megalosaurian (formerly a wastebasket taxon for all big theropods) with a sail. 1990s-2000s: Head + croc-like snout was discovered in a related spinosaur, Baryonyx. Spinosaurus was depicted in a generic theropod stance with long legs. 2010s: Approximate sail shape and crest now known; proportionately short legs were found, resulting in a quadrupedal stance and a knuckle-walking theory. Lip covering in dinosaurs was found to be possible. 2020s: Tadpole-like tail was found, further supporting a possible semi-aquatic lifestyle in Spinosaurus to some extent; legs were found to actually be a bit longer; bipedal again. 2023: A new study finds that spinosaurus could not support its weight bipedally, coming to the conclusion that it walked quadrupedally and/or that the current spinosaurus reconstruction is a chimera.
