I made some stickman sprites for the Roman Army that lasted from 725 BC to 476 AD, in the period of over a thousand years. This is my own version of a school project (since in Grade 6 we learned about Ancient Greece and Athens) and it's more of my interests. There are only currently twenty-four sprites that are implemented, although if you have more ideas, please tell me in the comments and I can add the sprite as soon as I can. List of sprites: -Auxilia: non-citizen troops supporting Roman legions -Imperial Legionaries (spear and sword variants): standard heavy combat infantry in the Roman legions after the Roman Empire was formed by Augustus -Evocati: legionaries that served their time in the Roman army and chose to be re-enlisted again as veterans of the legions by their centurion -Eagle Cohort Legionaries: the "legionarii aquilae" were the ones who guarded the eagle standard bearer -Urban Legionaries: legionaries in the cohors urbanae trained in urban combat and are tasked with defending Rome's cities -Praetorian Legionaries: stronger and well-trained legionaries performing the duties of praetorians -Praetorians: hand-picked veteran legionaries serving as bodyguards for Roman legates and generals -Praetorian Guards: the elite personal guards of the Roman Emperor -Centurion: the Roman commander of a Century (80-man formation) -Centurion Evocatus: a former centurion chosen to be recalled to duty by a military tribune, a consul, or the legate general -Marian Legionaries: standard heavy combat infantry formed during the Marian reforms by merging the melee, spear, and skirmisher infantry into one class -Veteran Legionaries: known as the "legionarii veteranii", they were the predecessors before the evocati legionaries -First Cohort Legionaries: the most elite legionaries in the first cohort of every legion who were called the "prima legionarii", often the best, well-trained, and disciplined troops of the entire legion itself -Triarii: heavy Roman spearmen deployed in the third line behind the principes in a maniple formation during the Roman Republic -Principes: heavy melee sword infantry deployed behind the hastati in a maniple formation during the Roman Republic -Hastati: medium swordsmen that formed the armored frontline of a maniple formation during the Roman Republic -Rorarii: light spearmen that formed the final lines of a maniple formation behind the triarii during the Roman Republic -Sagittarii: the Roman long-range archers, mostly formed from auxiliary units and could also fire flaming arrows -Velites: skirmishers at the front of the maniple formations during the Roman Republic -Antesignani: light spear infantry formed from legionaries, who were equipped with a spear to stop cavalry and several throwing spears to act as skirmishers -Aquilifer: the eagle bearer of a Roman legion -Signifer: the standard bearer of a Roman legion -Vexillarius: the banner bearer of a Roman legion -Gladiators: slave combatants that fight other combatants (such as other slaves and gladiators), and wild animals in arenas for respect and honor, as well as freedom to becoming a Roman citizen (NOT YET ADDED!)
Every historically-accurate sprite is made 100% by me, with reference from the internet and fanmade artwork. Feel free to use the sprites in your projects, although you can credit me with my name and the link to this project if you do. Here is the link to my WWII German Army sprites: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/877459623/ The next eleven units planned to be added: -Optio: the second-in-command to every centurion, who used a vine staff to keep the men in line -Leves: the poorest men in Rome were given javelins -Accensi: conscripts in auxiliary units who are slingers -Camillan Hastati: early hastati were given spears -Camillan Principes: medium spear unit before triarii -Praetoria Scipionis: the first ever praetorian guards, that were employed by the Scipio family -Evocati Augusti: veteran praetorian guards at the time of Augustus, who served their time and chose to re-enlist as bodyguards -Pedites Extraordinarii: elite triarii spear units -Socii Extraordinarii: elite auxiliary light melee infantry -Legionarii Clibamariorum: heavily-armored cataphract legionaries -Vigiles: the Police force, riot squad, and the firemen of a city who are essentially needed to control public order and keep public safety high -Cornicen: a junior officer in a century that carried a corni, a horn, which signals orders from the centurion -Imaginifer: a standard bearer in a legion that carried an imago, an image that is sort of like a bust, of the Roman Emperor to boost the morale of troops Update log in the last few days: N/A for now Planned fixes: -The Hastati's info box will be changed slightly, with the added information that Hastati from the Camillan period were once armed with hasta spears, and got their name from there. When they got pilums and the gladius in the Polybian reforms that replaced the heavy hasta, the kept their name. Their name did not come from using hasta as throwing spears. Hastas were heavy and cannot be thrown easily. Only verutums and pilums are the throwing spears in this project.
