Use the pickax to mine ores. The type of pick does not say which ores you can mine. Upgrading the pick only allows you to mine faster. The coal pick is (surprisingly) the best pickax in the game. If you have the coal pick, and you click on the flame icon in the top right corner, the pickax will catch on fire and the mining speed will be greatly increased.
