On February 6th at 4:17 am (local time) an earthquake of magnitude 7.8 hit Türkiye and northern Syria. A second earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 struck at 1:24 pm later that day. On February 20th at 8:04 pm (local time) a third earthquake hit with a magnitude of 6.3. Currently, more than 47,000 people have died, but as the rescue efforts continue the death toll will continue to rise. The earthquake is one of the largest since 1939 in Turkiye and it destroyed two hospitals, a local airport, and hit ten cities. With 3,000 buildings collapsing, there are many struggling through the winter storms homeless and without any resources. Among them, there are Syrian refugees. Even now, many are stuck underneath the wreckage, waiting for rescue teams to reach them. Why is this important to me? I am Ella, a Turkish-American who spends a lot of time over the summers in Türkiye. Many people in the area have lost family members and are left without shelter and food. I want to help make an impact immediately given the harsh winter conditions and the devastation in the area. All Turks know someone who has been directly affected by this disaster and any contribution will make a difference. I created a non-profit and raised over $16,000! :0 Why TPF? The Turkish Philanthropy Funds is an umbrella organization based in the US committed to providing help directly through trusted partner organizations on the grounds. TPF has been rated a 4/4 charity by Charity Navigator. It created the Türkiye Earthquake Relief Fund which sends 100% of the funds directly to the rescue teams and meets the immediate and long-term needs of survivors. While some of us celebrate valentines day with chocolate, cards, and gifts, others freeze and starve in the cold under debris without homes.
