A World of Black and White ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Life is like a game of chess. Well, not exactly, but in both cases, white is always, ALWAYS first. My name is Amara. Amara Keita. I am African. My family moved to the United States when I was young, and we've faced many injustices. I am now in middle school. On my first day, I thought I would finally fit in. But then, as I should have expected, I was mocked, bullied, made fun of... I got out of the car, grinning and ready for a new life. Quickly grabbing my schedule, I ran off to my first class. Being one of the first people there, I searched for my seat. The teacher walked over, welcoming me with a warm smile. Little did I know, that would be the only warm welcome I'd get. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Students began to pour into the classroom in groups, pushing and arguing. A white girl with WAY too much makeup walked up to me. Two of her friends followed. "Are you the new student?" she asked in a mocking voice. I cleared my throat. "Yes, I am." She laughed, analyzing me. "What are you /wearing/?" she scoffed, pointing to my colorful clothes and the special necklace Abba gave me. I glanced downwards; eyes filled with shame. I had wanted to wear clothes related to my culture for my special first day. Looks like that was a mistake. The girl chuckled, ripping my necklace off my neck and tossing it in the garbage. Frantically, I searched for it, pulling it out to find it cracked. Tears leaked down my face, and as I blinked vigorously to stop the flow, a boy kicked me. I ran off to the restroom, shaking with sobs. People have bullied me ever since... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ That teacher was the only one who cared. My family, my community, we all wish there were more people who cared. But alas, I cannot change their views. Still, /you/ can.
