this is a remix from @xaurora. to help spread awareness i'm not sure how to start this, though i'm making this project to spead awareness about what's happening in our world right now. if you don't know, early this morning (monday, february 6th), two huge earthquakes hit turkey and syria. the first one was a magnitude of 7.8, and the second hasn't been properly measured at this time, though suspected to be around 7.5-7.7. at the time i'm writing this, more than 17,000 people have died. this earthquake is turkey's worst disaster in almost a century, and was one of the largest ever recorded in turkey. it took roughly two minutes for the shaking to stop. it was powerful enough to be felt as far away as cyprus, lebanon and israel. the number of people killed/injured are expected to rise, as many rescuers are trying to find survivors in the freezing, snowy weather. the earthquake struck at 4:17am local time, at a depth of 11miles near the city of gaziantep. twelve hours later, a second quake, with a magnitude of 7.5 hit turkey's elbistan district of kahramanmaras providence. this earthquake was reported as being not an aftershock, but completely independent from the earlier quake. a resident in kahramanmaras reported that she had been living in an earthquake zone, so she was used to "being shaken", though this tremor was "the first time we have ever experienced anything like that". many thousands of people have been injured. thousands of buildings have collapsed, and several videos can show the moment they fell. many buildings that were 4-5 stories high are now flattened, roads have been destroyed, and there are huge piles of rubble as far as the eye can see. large fires have started sparking in southern turkey, and social media users have claimed that they were caused by damage to the gas pipelines. turkey's energy minister confirmed there had been serious damage to the infrastructure. citizens have been called to make blood donations, and the turkish red crescent president, kerem kınık said on twitter that additional blood/medical products were being sent to the affected region. following an international appeal for help, turkey's president recep tayyip erdogan said that 45 countries had offered support. search and rescue teams have been sent from other countries to turkey, hoping to find people in danger. school had also been suspended in these cities for at least a week. a volunteer with the white helmets rescue group fought back tears when describing the devastation in sarmada, which is near the border with turkey. he says, "many buildings in different cities and villages in north-western syria collapsed. still now, many families are under the rubble. we are trying to save them but it's a very hard task for us. we need help. we need the international community to do something, to help us, to support us. north-western syria is now a disaster area. we need help from everyone to save our people." an unknown number of people are missing, from babies to the elderly, stuck under rubble in need of help. while turkey has received many offers of help from the us, france, greece, the czech republic, romania and many more, syria hasn't received the same amount of help due to the civil war going on. a woman in southeast turkey reported that "[my family was] shaken like a cradle. there were nine of us at home. two sons of mine are still in the rubble, i'm waiting for them," poor internet connections and damaged roads hinder the efforts to assess and address the impact of the quake. temperatures in turkey were expected to fall to near freezing overnight, worsening the conditions for people trapped under rubble or left homeless. rain was also falling on monday after snowstorms swept the country this past weekend. the norwegian refugee council said the earthquake would only add to the suffering of millions of syrians already enduring a humanitarian crisis due to the civil war they've been fighting for the past 11 years. the earthquake and it's aftermath had been compared to an apocalypse by many. a rescue service known for pulling people from the ruins of buildings destroyed by air strikes, said that they were in "a race against time to save the lives of those under the rubble". there are so, so many people effected by this earthquake, including one of my best friends, olivia (). i'll refrain from going into too much detail about her personal experience with it, though her and her family are safe. this earthquake was happening at the same time as the grammys was, and to think that all of those people who could be watching it, or spending time with their family and friends lost that opportunity to do that, maybe forever. please send all of your love, and support to those who were effected, and spread awareness on it. if you could repost this, or make a project similar to it to spread the word, that would be great. thanks for reading.
just an add on this is so sad because when Ukraine was in war with Russia that's all everyone was talking about and everyone helped ukraine but it is sad to see people favoring countries. If you didn't know Syria has been in need of help for YEARS! And nobody talks about that.
