Mandarin Tones Mandarin tones aren't as hard as it seems, at first glance you would think it's a difficult thing to learn, but it's actually not- compared to Cantonese. It probably sounds really complicated. But once you get used to it, it’s really not that hard. A Chinese word can mean more than 5 different things depending on the tone. Even when the sounds are similar, the meaning can still be clear. The example that is often given to teach Mandarin pronunciation is that mā means ‘mother', má means ‘hemp', mǎ means ‘horse' and mà means ‘to curse/scold'. Chinese tones matter a lot and should be the first thing you learn if you're learning Chinese. If you don't focus and practice your Chinese tones, they can be a misunderstanding. Example : 我想问你?(wǒ xiǎng wèn nǐ?) - Can I ask you? 我想吻你?(wǒ xiǎng wěn nǐ?) - Can I kss you? 问 (wèn) and 吻 (wěn) has the same pinyin, but their tones are different. So, please do learn your Chinese tones correctly and seriously so there won't be an awkward misunderstanding.
