There is a cast system based on how powerful their animal is. Thalia and her family were in the upper cast and a part of the government, except her brother who bonded to a lower class animal and so their father disowned him. The lower casts rose up in rebellion and all the upper cast was sold to scientists. The building Thalia and others of her age were in caught on fire. Ethan rescued her and nursed her back to health, then she left to wander in the woods.
