*.•'.SKYSCRAPER.•'*.• Prologue Fantasia walked in the dim moonlight, her pelt brushing with her mother’s. “Fantasia.” Called her mother. “Remember that we were once royalty. We still are. Tomorrow, you become the Duchess of the Skyborne.” At that moment, Fantasia did not know what that meant. But she would soon. Wet with tears, Fantasia looked down at her mother’s body. If she had swum quicker… if only she dived faster… her mother would be at her room, singing her a lullaby. She could have stopped her mother from diving into the ocean… Chapter 1 Anemone swum like the wind in the thrashing waves. She surpassed the others. Maybe a bit too much then. She looked back and saw that there were no followers. She grinned. Another win— Crash! Anemone bumped into the hard rocks while she had been swimming like crazy. “Ow!” She moaned. “It had to be a rock! Why not a—“ Her voice trailed away as her eyes locked with another mulsae. “A seaborne mulsae…” he said to himself. “Interesting. Not what you see every day is it?” He quickly scribbled into his notebook made out of tree bark. The fieldborne scanned Anemone. “Female, animal… hmm… I’d say shark.” His radiant green eyes stopped at her head. “Lemon shark. No? I saw some shark hybrids before but you are the pretti— I mean the most colorful one.” Anemone thought he blushed. A bit, but still. He coughed. “I’m Oak. What about you?” Chapter 2 Oak had never seen a mulsae this beautiful. Pale lemon fur, deep ocean blue eyes, twinkling golden bell, and lime zest paw-tips. All better than the dull colors of the forest. Even her two shark tails were charming. Most of all, her eyes were deep, filled with the hidden secrets and wonders, unlike his. His eyes were a dull green color, muted as well. She was also seaborne. It felt like he had a connection to them, the rushing waves that they rode, the refreshing coconut water they drank, and the salty sea breeze seemed to call his name. He gazed into the seaborne’s eyes. And asked. “I’m Oak. What about you?” There was a silent gap between them. Only the waves made sound. “Uuhh…” she stammered. “Anemone. Yes. You may call me Anemone.” Anemone. What a pretty name. It fits her… His gaze didn’t move. Oak’s consciousness only returned when Anemone… slapped him. “Oak you said?” She huffed. “Don’t go to strangers and then stare at them like that. It’s… weird.” Oak was startled. Not only he did not expect a slap, but Anemone seemed like she hated him. “I have to go. Now.” Anemone tried to plunge back to the sea. “I’ve got an important contest to finish—“ Oak grabbed her tail. His paws did not give way to Anemone. “It… it’s not safe. I know the Oceanrunner contest is important but…” Oak breathed in. “…it’s raining. If you go now, you will die.” Chapter 3 Fantasia’s swan wings led her to a cave. Full of crystals, ancient artifacts… and her mother’s grave. She could hear unholy voices whispering into her ears. ‘Restore the light, and shine it upon, a kingdom of darkness, full of misery and grief.’ The words swam above her head. The bright crystals grew faint. A kingdom of darkness, grieving at the loss of light. Fantasia stepped into the Starpool. There, with the cold water seeping through her fur, she could feel safe. The pool where dead royalty was buried. She felt closer to her family. Maybe… her family was the kingdom, and she has to retore the light. The light of joy. Chapter 4 Anemone looked at the crazy fieldborne, Oak. He was definitely crazy. A very weird mulae, who thinks rain can kill you. ‘Seriously we can breathe underwater.’ She thought. ‘And what is that bark note?’ Oak guessed her thoughts. He must’ve saw that she was looking at his book. “This is my journal.” He explained. “Records of my studies. I study mulaen.” He showed her a picture that surprised her. There was a detailed description and picture of Anemone. Not colored, but you could realize instantly. “You drew me.” Anemone looked at Oak. “Why does it say that I am the most beaut—“ Oak quickly shut the note. It was obvious that he liked her. “Uhh…” Oak turned the subject. “To seaborne mulae, Oceanrunner contests are to decide who can survive most in the wild, right?” “Yes. So I have to go.” Anemone rolled her blue eyes. It was getting darker. And that meant sea monsters. “What if you survive in a place with unknown mulaen?” Oak suggested. “You survived— alone— in the forest of fieldbornes. What about that?” Anemone stared at him. She cocked her head. “Wouldn’t that be something.”
