A rock slipped under her foot and she let out a little yelp of surprise. It had only been a few hours since she said goodbye to Frost and Alaska, but now the sky was completely dark. It was harder to get up the mountains than she had thought. She stopped for a moment and glanced back toward the valley. Toward Lightpack. And Alaska. She could see the hills of the highlands even from here. And the river, as it wove its way through the valley. A small sigh escaped her. It was so beautiful. Maybe... maybe she could come back one day. Or maybe she would be happy with a new life. New friends'. New *family*, even. If she wanted it. She realized with a pang that she did. She turned away once more and began walking again. If she kept going, she could reach the top of this mountain and rest for awhile. After all, there really wasn't any hurry. There was no one waiting on her. No one depending on her. She was free. And alone. One paw in front of the other, over and over. Her gaze trailed along the rocky slopes ahead. Forward, forward. She couldn't stop. She didn't want to stop. Finally she reached the top and collapsed in a panting heap of gray fur. After a few moments she caught her breath and got to her paws. The valley was spread out before her. From up here, everything looked small and insignificant. She raised her head and howled, a sad but hopeful note that hung in the air around her. As if faded away, she turned and disappeared into the darkness.
