The queen did not treat her well, but she had to work for a living. "Are you almost done yet?" Sapphire barked. Cotton took the tea to the queen and her daughter, Moon. Sapphire glared at her, and eyed the tea suspiciously. "Do you really think I would put holly berries in it?" Cotton thought, exasperated. The queen took a tiny sip. She looked up, hissing, "You put too little sugar in it. Now get out of my sight. I have better things to do." Cotton dipped her head politely, and flew away. "How much more demanding can the queen get?" she thought. That night, Queen Sapphire died in her sleep. Her daughter, Moon, would now be wearing her crown and sitting on her throne. The first thing the new queen did was call a meeting. Cotton was surprised to find that she had an invitation as well. At the meeting, Cotton found a spot next to the queen's advisor, Gray. She grinned at her, and Cotton smiled back. "As you all know," Queen Moon began, only to be cut off by a snarl from someone in the crowd, "What's the Servant doing here?" Cotton felt every hair on her pelt burning. She resisted the urge to yell, "YOU aren't a servant! You don't understand the pain of Queen Sapphire and how lowly people think of you!" Prince Dusk, cousin of Moon, glared up at the crowd. "Shush, mouse-brain," he snapped. "It affects her too." The cat subsided, muttering. Moon glanced around, then continued, "As I was saying, you all know that I am blind-" her blank eyes shone with defiance "-which is why I will be electing another advisor." With a polite dip to her current advisor, Gray, she added, "Hopefully that is fine with you, Gray." "The more the merrier!" Gray replied cheerfully. "That's all," the young queen suddenly announced, standing up. She gathered Prince Dusk and Gray and they went to discuss who should be the other advisor. Moon stamped a paw. "All right, down to business," she meowed. "Gray, it affects you the most, so what do you think?" "That servant who sat next to me today," Gray offered immediately. She remembered how she had smiled back to her--NO ONE did that. No one DARES do that. "What was her name?" Moon thought for a moment, then finally mewed, "Let's go check." She flipped open a giant book of all the citizens, Gray guessed, and searched through the names. Finally, she said, "Her name is Cotton." "Then I vote for Cotton," Gray declared. She elbowed Dusk. "WE vote for Cotton," she corrected with a stern glare. Dusk gave a thumbs-up. Queen Moon stuffed the book back into the shelf. "Alright. I'll announce it tomorrow." Cotton flipped over and over that night, unable to sleep. "If the new advisor hates me, it's the end for me," she realized. That morning, Cotton woke up at dawn groggy. Surprisingly, no cat came to order her to do her chores. She stumbled out into the courtyard, where she found all the cats gathered. Queen Moon was standing on a balcony with Dusk and Gray. "Cats of the Kingdom," she said in a loud, clear voice. "We have chosen another advisor to work alongside Gray." She gestured toward her current advisor. "That lucky cat is... Cotton." Cotton's eyes flew open in shock. She was awake at once. "ME?" she thought, screaming in her head. "Why me?" "COTTON!" Gray led the cheering. Soon the whole crowd was cheering her name. She sometimes caught mutters of "what?" and "the servant?" but at that time she didn't care anymore. She would be respected and important among the cats. Her whole life would change.
