The brown leaves crunched beneath my feet. Bucket in hand, I scrambled to reach the trees before my brothers. We helped each other collect the blackberries, plopping them by handfuls into our buckets. As I reached for a berry, a thorn pricked my hand and a thin line of blood trickled down my pinky finger. But I wasn’t going to let that stop me. We continued picking berries, while secretly stuffing them in our mouths until blue juice ran down our chins. But I know the best berries were hidden beneath the foliage. Life’s treats won’t just come to you. You have to search for them.
