(A/N: Whenever you find a “*”, it means there will be a description in N&C to tell you what it means) ..Anne’s POV.. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ I was unable to sleep that night. The thoughts of what could have possibly happened to those two boys drove me near to insanity. As I was thinking, my mind continuously wandered back to Alek. Looking into those eyes, one could clearly see he no longer had a childlike spark in his eyes, as if it was forcefully put out long ago. It was about 2:48AM when I looked at the clock on my bedside table. Being the mother I am, it was only natural I checked on the Pio, Kayin, and Alek. Walking outside my bedroom door, I took a few mere steps forward to reach Pio’s nursery. I would have put Kayin there, too. But Alek wanted Kayin to be with him. It figured, honestly, seeing how protective Alek was of Kayin the whole time. I quietly opened the door, the soft creaking being the only noise in the house at the moment. Pio was resting in his crib peacefully while he cuddled with his teddy bear. I chuckled to myself as he curled into a small ball. I then went to Alek and Kayin’s room, well, the guest bedrooom they were sleeping in. I had an extra high-chair, yes, but not a crib. So I reluctantly put Kayin in the adult bed alongside Alek. But.. nothing would happen, I’m sure of it. I made sure Kayin had no pillow, as he wasn’t ready for it yet—maybe he was, but I can’t be to careful—while Alek did use the pillow. Opening the door, it was to my surprise when Alek was already looking my way. I paused at the doorway, staring into his tired eyes. Luckily, I had caught myself before those alluring eyes had trapped me within its blue tides. I drifted my attention to Kayin and smiled as he was blissfully sleeping next to his brother, who sat up in alertness even before I walked in. “..Why aren’t you asleep..?” I whispered gently, taking a few steps forward and standing next to the foot of the bed. Alek hadn’t responded, and continued his unrelenting stare. I pursed my lip softly, unsure of what to say next. Unexpectedly, an idea came to my head, and I stood up quickly before whispering a small “Excuse me. I’ll be right back,” before I walked out. I headed towards a storage closet downstairs, and found myself looking though a small box before I let out an “Aha!” Silently. Heading back upstairs, I walked into the room again and placed the small nightlight I found into the outlet nearest to the bed. Alek stared at me while I did so. And though it was monotonous, I could spot a flicker of curiosity within his eyes. I looked back at him, a smile growing on my face as I said, “There,” I started, placing my hands on my hips. “Some light, seeing as how all you had was the window light.” I walked closer to the boy, making sure not to startle him as I stood in front of him respectfully. I angled my body, resting my hands on my lap to meet his level. “If you need something, please don’t hesitate to ask me, okay..?” I uttered softly, my brows curling up in concern. The boy had no response, and I sighed softly in return. “Please get some rest,” I said to him walking towards the door. I had stopped for a brief moment and looked back at him, only to see he hadn’t taken his eyes off me before I closed the door and went back into my bedroom. ..Alek’s POV (3rd).. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ (Warning: I was tired as heck when I wrote this—) It was a little strange to Alek why that woman was so hospitable. Was it because he hadn’t seen such kindness in seemingly so long? Possibly. But he didn’t know what to think of it. When he had first met the woman, he suspected she was just like every other miserable being he had met upon arriving in Candela. But, looking at her, she seemed different to him. It could have just been the fact Kayin trusted her so quickly, unlike.. Unlike them. It had relieved him significantly to know she had a son Kayin’s age. Pio, Alek believed was his name. Seeing how the boy was well taken care of, Alek had a feeling Kayin would get the things he needed. And that was all Alek wanted. That same night, Alek sat in his bed, gently caressing Kayin’s soft hair before he placed his hands back on his lap. That woman came in soon after, he silently listened to her words, but payed no mind to them. But, to his surprise, she left abruptly and came back with a small item in her hand. When she had walked over and plugged the item into an outlet. He watched in curiosity as the light was turned on. The woman.. Anne, looked at Alek one last time before telling him to call on her if he needed anything. Alek took it into consideration, but otherwise ignored her. When she left, Alek lied down on the bed, his body cradling his little brother. Alek rested his head on the pillow he was given, and he held Kayin close as he stared at the nightlight. (Continued down below)
(+) It was a dark room, which he was used to at this point. But Anne had been gracious enough to give this small light. Alek stared at the lightbulb as he propped his head onto his left arm. Those people never cared if Alek or Kayin were afraid, or if they sat in the dark. But that woman did..? How could a complete stranger take in.. No, that wasn’t the question. The question was: why did Alek trust her? He felt like a fool for not learning his lesson about trusting strangers.. But it took one stare at Kayin to respond to his own question, “She can help Kayin,” he whispered softly, caressing his brother’s hair with the free hand he had. He didn’t care about himself, really. But he did care about the well-being of his brother. As long as Kayin could eat, he didn’t mind suffering. Alek didn’t sleep, though his body screamed at him to do so.. Well, that was before. His body now was more cooperative. It was a bad habit, yes—especially for a child—, but it worked to keep both Kayin and himself safe. Hours upon hours went by, and Alek stared at the ceiling blankly. Anne checked in once in a while whenever she had woken up. That wasn’t new to Alek, what was new to him was the concern she had over Alek and his lack of sleep. But all Alek did in response was maintain his silence. The silence he had forcefully been taught. Seemingly much to the woman’s dismay. Before Alek knew it, morning had finally come. ▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅ TO BE CONTINUED . . .
