⩩ ꒰ ❛Social Justice❜ ꒱ an essay ⩩ © 2023 Social justice is defined in the dictionary as “Social justice is the view that everyone deserves equal economic, political and social rights and opportunities.” or in simpler terms “social justice is the idea that everyone no matter race, color, gender, religion, or other should deserve the same economic, political and social rights and opportunities”. Though now, social justice is embedded in our culture, laws and our lives in general, but in the past, humans and society have struggled on the concept of social justice, for example in the 1950s, The city of Montgomery, Alabama, they still required people of color to sit in the back half of city buses and to yield their seats to white riders when the front half of the bus, reserved for whites, was full. But on December 1st an African - American woman named Rosa Parks had refused to yield her seat to a white passenger, and therefore she was arrested for violating the segregation law. Raged by the unfair arrest of Rosa Parks, Marthur Luther King Jr. And other activists formed the Montgomery Improvement Association to boycott the bus system; the boycott lasted for 56+ weeks or 13 months, until The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that segregation on public buses was unconstitutional. Another example is the Jim Crow laws, a set of laws set in the South, the Jim Crow laws were laws that segregated both races, and made it illegal for the races to mix. And before the Jim Crow laws, during the 1860s, “black codes” were laws or “codes”, that were strict local and state rules that detailed when and what formerly enslaved people and African-Americans could work and how much they were paid for. On August 28, 1963, over a quarter of a million Americans gathered near the Lincoln Memorial to hear the now famous, “I have a dream” speech that King wrote, the speech was about economic and civil rights, and also talked about the end to racism and social justice, the speech was an influence to the Civil Rights movement, and also made the Federal Government realize how much of an importance social justice and equality is. Another major protest for social justice and equality was the “Selma-to-Montgomery” march / protest, the protest happened three (3) times, the protests were organized to protest the blocking and how hard it was for African-Americans and black people to vote due to the racist and segregated Jim Crow laws. One other lesser known justice protest or movement that was considered a ‘failure” by many was the Albany movement, the reason for the protest was to end all forms of segregation in the city of Albany, Georgia, though many say and believe that the Albany movement was a not a success– but a failure due to the fact that the local government did not react, and did not give much — if any concessions. If King had not stood up for social justice, the world would probably still be segregated and it would probably be chaotic, and the U.S. would probably be segregated, and African-Americans and colored people would always be treated unequally and be looked down upon. In conclusion, King’s peaceful protests were successful and helped end social injustice and were effective in helping make the government, and population in general realize how important social justice is.
