In many countries, women and girls are treated like objects. This means that they cannot do what men are allowed to do, for example in those days men were there to earn money, while women had to look after the children or take care of the household. If you wanted to go to work, you needed your husband's consent, which you usually didn't get. So women couldn't decide for themselves, which, as I said, is still the case in some countries today.
