I nestled into my mother. "Mama, tell us about your human again!" I asked. "Well..." My mother told us about her human. "He had dark brown eyes, warm. His hair was black, like my fur." She told us how much they had loved each other, mother and her human. "Mother, will we find humans?" My brother, Nutty, asked. "Yes." Was her answer. There are five of us puppies. Me, my sister, Rose, my brother, Nutty, and Dan, my brother. MY name is Spice. Our mother and us live in a pet store, where our humans will find us. But, for now, we are too young to have a human find us. One morning, the lead human picked us all up. "Come on. Let's put you on display." His voice was kind, and his eyes sparkled. I licked his cheek. "Hohoho!" He boomed. I felt myself be dropped into the display pen. Dan was excited when the first human walked in. He tried to climb over to the human. She picked Dan up and paid for him. Only three of us were left. Rose was taken next. She wagged her tail and a jolly man who walked in picked her up. I felt a little sad, seeing another same-litter go. The main human took me and Nutty back to the litter-birth place. "Nutty! Spice!" Mother yipped and licked us. "You weren't taken today!" She glanced at me. "I'm not surprised with you, but Nutty!" Mother looked at her son with love. "Come on, time for bed, sweeties." I was rocked to sleep by her lullaby, "When you sleep, you find a place. And when you do, a dream befalls you." The next morning, me and Nutty were put back on display. Nutty went with a little boy with black hair. I waited. When a strong, cruel-looking person came, I tried to cower. He picked me up."Cute." He gruffly scoffed. I went home that day. Chains were waiting, and they choked me when they were put on. "If you see someone, bark." He walked into his house again. A few hours later, a beautiful lady walked by. I barked. "COME ON, HUMAN!" My bark sent him running out. He saw the lady, but left without saying hi. I lay down, sadly whimpering. Rain came, but the next morning, the man let me off the chain! I saw my chance. I ran. He called my name, but I didn't listen. I was free.
