I remember everything as if it was yesterday, and I remember the kids that left once they found out they possessed magic. Nobody else remembered though. I kept asking myself, “Why?” Why had I been able to remember? How come the magic didn’t work on me? I couldn't possibly have had magic, could I? I gazed down at my palms, light graphite and ink were smeared on them. Ever since the “testing” I haven’t been able to focus as much in school. My mind always wanders to the kids who had magic. What did it feel like? Days go by in a blur, then the days morph to weeks, next thing I know it’s been 2 months since we were tested, but the memory stays fresh in my mind. ︶︶༉‧₊˚.༉‧₊˚.︶︶༉‧₊˚.︶︶༉‧₊˚.︶︶༉‧₊˚.︶︶༉‧₊˚.︶︶༉₊˚︶ Saturday. One out of the two days of freedom I get every week. I zip my sweatshirt up and shut the front door behind me. I breathe in the fresh, crisp air and start jogging. I normally jog every Saturday morning if I can, but some days are too busy. Today, I decided to jog through the park, but instead of taking the main path, I cut through some hedges and around some trees. I find myself on a back dirt path that very few people walk on. There are more plants and more trees tower over you, providing more shade. I glance behind me to see a shadow, then it disappears. Strange, I think. A bush rustles and that weird shadow appears in front of me, on the side of the path. I slow my jog to a walk, extremely cautious of what I might find. I realize I have no idea where I am, I don’t recognize the forest or the path. The vegetation is much thicker, I am definitely not in the park anymore. The bush rustles gain, a twig snaps, and I slowly back further away from it. In a blink of an eye, a creature jumps at me, I jump. It looks similar to a wolf, but its eyes are a piercing yellow, they almost seem to glow. It has a grey coat with darker swirls as accents, it’s unlike anything I have ever seen before. It pounces at me, and I fall back and stubble away, moving as quickly as I can. It growls and snarls at me, and I crawl as quickly as I can. My back hits a rock, I’m trapped. In an instant, I come face to face with the creature. Its claws scrape my arms, and I feel heat rush to my face. It’s about to bite me but a large light temporarily blinds me and the creature, it’s distracted, I stumble behind a tree. Then I see him, I remember exactly who he is, Finn. He is dressed in a grey T-shirt with jeans, he lunges at the wolf. He must have been a sky στοιχείο bearer because he manages to shoot small bolts at the creature and scare it away. His deep brown eyes look at me with fear. “You alright?” he asks, walking closer to me. I take a shaky breath, “Yes, just a little startled,” I reply. I touch a hand to my cheek, the pain sinks in and when I remove my hand, deep, scarlet blood stains it. “Come with me,” Finn continues, “I can get you all fixed up.” He gestures for me to follow him, and out of fear of what else might happen, I do. “I don’t believe we've met before,” he continues and holds out his hand, “my name is-” “Finn,” I say, the instant I said it, I wished I could have taken it back. I immediately clapped my hand over my mouth. I’m not supposed to remember his name, I’m not supposed to remember him at all. “How did you know that?” he furrows his brow. “Lucky guess?” I whisper. I am a terrible liar, I look at him, he knows I’m lying. “You remember that day, don’t you?” He says this softly. There isn’t any point in lying, he wouldn’t believe me If I did. “Yes,” now he knows, it isn’t a secret anymore. Finn doesn't reply, he just turns and continues walking, and I blindly follow, not knowing where the heck we were going. After about 10 minutes of silence, we come to an opening in the trees, and what I see shocks me. Kids my age fill the lawn surrounding a large building. I gasp, some are doing magic, and others just sit back and watch. Finn must have seen the look of shock and amazement on my face. “Welcome,” he says, “to Everlore Academy.” We walk through the field, some kids stare at me, others whisper to their friends and laugh, I block it all out. He places his hand on my back, and we walk into the building. A few minutes later I am sitting on a cot with both Finn and some other dude staring at me, with a very concerned look. They whisper for a minute, then the other guy looks at me and walks forward. “Hello he says, I am Dr. Robspin,” he holds out his hand. I accept and shake it. “I’m Autumn,” I reply, “Autumn Ellison.” “Well, Autumn, It has come to my attention that your memory wasn’t erased when you were tested, correct?”
More below “Yes,’ I inhale, “is there something wrong with me?” “I highly doubt that,” Dr. Robspin says with a smile, “now we will get you all fixed up and on your way in a bit. Just as a procedure,” he continues, “I am going to take a blood sample.” Fear fills my head to the brim. He pricks my finger with a needle and takes some of the blood from the small bead. As he exits the room Finn sits down in a chair across from me and crosses his arms. “So,” he says, “you seriously remember everything.” “Yeah,” I continue, “why is it such a big deal?” He tilts his head and smirks, “Well,” he says, “it’s never happened before. There’s something about you, that's, different.” We sit in silence for a few minutes, then Dr. Robspin enters the room. He wears a face of concern. Finn stands up and before the door shuts I hear Dr. Robspin say, “We have a problem.”
