Chapter 2 Coral Today was the first day of high school, and it was the worst day of my life. I know, I know, it's totally Disney Channel cliché, but it's true. I mean, does anyone ever really have an amazing first day? Like, no one ever says to their mom after the first day of school, "Today was the best day of my life! I became a popular kid in 1 hour, I'm friends with the entire school, and I already have a boyfriend! Oh, and I ate cupcakes and Jello for lunch!" That's literally never happened in the history of the education system called school, whether it be public school, private school, or anything else in between. I guess the only people who actually had a good day were the people who spent all their free time bullying me. It's no wonder. They're the popular kids, wealthy and snooty with infinite good looks. As Dipper Pines from the Disney Channel TV classic Gravity Falls once said, "Pacifica's rich. She's cheating at life." That's what I told the bullies, which probably wasn't the smartest idea I've had. So now I have a butt-load of bullies on my back who make fun of me for having Disney Plus as one of the apps on my phone instead of Netflix. But I don't mind. If Walt Disney had never thought of the wonderful mouse named Mickey, then I probably would be watching Stranger Things or South Park like the rest of my classmates, which I wouldn't be very happy doing. Disney is my love and my life. Even if I was killed for watching it, I would still watch Disney my entire life. A basic summary of my day goes something like this: I walk into the main hall, and am confronted by people who seem to like my Encanto shirt, but then I realize they're actually making fun of it. I go to first period and get bullied when the same people see my phone background is Belle. I go to second period, and get bullied again for my backpack design having a Disney Villains pattern. In third period, I get bullied again because my hair looks like Minnie ears. 4th period, I can't even focus because spitballs are constantly being blown into my hair. At lunch, an unexpected food fight occurs—but the food is thrown at ME. I throw away the note my mom gave me wishing me luck on my first day. During period 5, I retreat into the bathroom, but even THERE I can't catch a break because the popular girls are in there, too. Period 6. Man, oh, man. I get pranked by the popular kids. When I walk into the classroom, dozens of little Mickey-shaped pieces of paper fall from the ceiling and into my hair. I decide to take a shower that night and wash my hair THOROUGHLY. Then 7th period arrives, and I just can't take it. The entire class starts humming When You Wish Upon a Star. I run out of class with tear trails and blazing red cheeks. So, yeah. I guess you could say I had a pretty sucky day. And my best friend Mindy Wilson wasn't even there to help me through it. Well, at least I can see her now. — Mindy and I are sitting in my backyard, eating sugary snacks and discussing our day. This has been the first time I've seen Mindy all day, so I'm delighted to rant to her about my terrible day. But before I have a chance to start venting, she starts talking a mile a minute. "How was my day? Yeah, it was amazing. I made lots of new friends, and it was the best day ever!" Mindy exclaims. NO ONE has an amazing first day. "That's great, but I didn't actually ask how your day was," I point out. "I know. I was just really excited to tell you," Mindy shrugs. "Yeah...." I sigh. I swallow to hold back the tears I didn't even realize were forming in my eyes. "Coral?" Mindy asks, worry in her voice. She looks at me with a furrowed brow. "Are you okay?" "No..." I whimper. "I had the worst day ever!" "What happened?" she questions. "Everything terrible that could possibly happen!" I say, my voice cracking and tears racing down my cheeks. "Oh, Coral...." Mindy gasps. She scoots closer to me and holds me in a tight hug. "I was bullied all day! And now I have to take 5 hours to wash my hair!" I sob. Mindy's head shoots up. "Who was bullying you?" "I don't know. EVERYONE!" I screech. "Everyone!? Ugh, they WILL be punished for hurting my sweet wittle Cowal!" Mindy huffs. "Thank you, Mindy. You're the b-" I start, but I'm interrupted by Mindy's phone, which starts vibrating. "W-who's that?" I ask. Mindy takes her phone out of her pocket and smiles. "It's one of my new friends." Then she says under her breath, "He called me back already?" "So...what are you gonna do to the bullies?" I say to get back on track.
More below "Um, I don't know. I'll think of something," Mindy says, shrugging her shoulders. She kneels so she can stand up, and she clicks the accept button on the call. "By the way, do we have to keep meeting in your backyard? It's more comfortable indoors," she adds before walking inside with her phone to her ear. My best friend, who stuck through with me despite everything, had just abandoned me. I was alone. Truly alone. Author's note: Sorry this chapter took so long to write!
