our sun will never explode. It doesn’t have enough mass to create a class II supernova. A star needs to have a mass 10 times that of our sun in order for it to explode. If the sun were to explode it would take around 134 days for the shock wave to reach Earth. But the neutrinos and radiation travel at the speed of light and would reach us in 8 minutes and we would all die. The sun, however, will become a red giant in about 7.5 billion years and the size of the sun will expand to about the orbit of Jupiter. Everything within that radius will roast. Unfortunately, before that happens, the sun will become too hot for life to survive here in 1.75 to 3.5 billion years. As long as human life doesn’t wipe itself out, I feel very confident we can find and migrate to other habitable planets in the next couple of hundred years, and probably a lot sooner. Oh….. and when our red giant sun finally uses up all of its helium fuel and stops the internal fusion process, our sun will collapse into a white dwarf around the size of the earth. At that point the sun’s core will consist of carbon, oxygen, silicon, nitrogen, and several other common elements. The white dwarf will eventually cool down into a lifeless super dense giant rock. HOWEVER, if our sun wanders into the vicinity of a main sequence star (much like our sun is today), it will suck the gasses from that star, increasing its own mass. And if that mass reaches 1.44 times its mass, our sun will have sufficient mass to implode and explode into a class 1A supernova which will create the super heavy elements. -eva the GAY
