This is BSL (British Sign Language). In the UK around 151,000 people use it, with around 87,000 of them being deaf (this figure does not include people who use it professionally, e.g. interpreters, unless they also use it at home). There are at least 50,000 children who are deaf in the UK. Sign languages are fully functional and expressive languages; at the same time they differ profoundly from spoken languages. BSL is a visual-gestural language with a distinctive grammar using handshakes, facial expressions, gestures and body language to convey meaning.
