Chapter 3 "Jaykit, from now on until you have received your name, you shall be known as Jaypaw. Your mentor shall be Sorrelpelt," Danwstar announced, her bright red pelt gleaming in the sun. Jaypaw turned around to look at Sorrelpelt angrily, He didn't want to be a medicine cat appretnice, but after the strange dream Sorrelpelt received three moons ago told her that he was going to be her apprentice. Jayshade looked far from being happy, but Gingerstripe looked pleased. Jaypaw moved out of the nursery, and when he was five moons old, Cottonwillow had two kits, Stormkit and Cloudkit. "Come on Jaypaw, you have a lot to learn," Sorrelpelt meowed. Jaypaw followed her reluctantly. He hated the smell of herbs and the smell of her den. He thought that he got to have a choice, but Gingerstripe also insisted that he must be a medicine cat. Only Jayshade didn't agree with her. While Jaypaw was stuck in his thoughts, he didn't realize that Sorrelpelt was talking to him. "Jaypaw, repeat what I just said," she meowed. Jaypaw sat down and loked at his paws. He needed to fake a sign to get out of this medicine cat job. "Jaypaw!" Sorrelpelt snapped. Jaypaw lifted his head, letting his fur bristle in rage. "I had a sign from StarClan!" Jaypaw gasped. This time it was actually coming true, though. Jaypaw saw himself, with his jay feather tail. He saw himself walking through an open meadow towards the sunset. As he disappeared, the only thing he saw was his tail. Then, when he looked at the ground, he realized there were bloody paw prints. The scene began to disappear, and the only thing he saw was bloody paw prints. He blinked the vision away. He noticed that Sorrelpelt was looking at him. "Tell me what the vision was about," she meowed. "I was in a meadow, and I saw myself. I went into the sunset, and the only thing I saw left was my tail. And when I looked at the ground, I saw bloody paw prints. I don't think I am meant to be a medicine cat," he meowed. Sorrelpelt nodded. "You got a vision. That means you are supposed to be a medicine cat. And maybe StarClan is telling you you have to be a medicine cat." Jaypaw glared at Sorrelpelt. "I don't want to be one, okay?" he snarled, racing out of the den and out of camp. He didn't care what StarClan said. He realized that he was running too fast, and when he tried to stop, he ran straight into the gorge. fear welled inside him, and before he could do anything, and hit the water.
