Chapter 4 Jaypaw was flung back and forth by the crashing waves. He tried to scream for help, but water raced down his throat. His lungs were screaming for air. He opened his eyes, and he realized that a small light was above him. He started to move his legs like he was running, and soon he was able to break through the surface. He took thankful gulps of air before he heard a loud roaring sound. Before he could react, he fell down a waterfall. "Help me!" he screeched in fear. He closed his eyes, knowing this was the end of his story. He hit the water, driving the breath out of him. He sunk to the bottom of the gorge, where he hit his head. Jaypaw watched everything turn black, and he let out one final breath before the darkness engulfed him. Jaypaw opened his eyes. He was resting in a strange place. It smelled strongly of fish. As his vision cleared, he realized a cat was pressing cobwebs onto his head. The strange tom seemed to notice that he was awake. "Stay still, young one," the old tom huffed. "Rosepaw, go get Dawnstar, Sorrelpelt, Gingerstripe, and Jayshade. Firefox, go get Streamstar and Thornfang," the old tom ordered. A fire colored she-cat and a black she-cat with red eyes stepped out of the den. Jaypaw realized that this must be the RiverClan medicine den. He saw Dawnstar and the WindClan patrol come into the den, with Rosepaw, Streamstar, and Thornfang close behind. "How is Jaypaw?" Dawnstar meowed slowly. The old tom turned around. "He hit his head, but other than that he should be fine." Sorrelpelt dipped her head to the tom. "You were always a great medicine cat, Appleshade," she meowed quietly. Jaypaw closed his eyes. "Come on, Jaypaw," he heard Gingerstripe meow. "It's time to go home." Jaypaw let Gingerstripe put him on Jayshade's back, and he let himself go unconcious again. When he opened his eyes again, he was in his nest. Jayshade was curled up around him. "Your awake, Jaypaw," Jayshade purred. Jaypaw looked up at his father. Jayshade's eyes were cold and blank. "You were never meant to be a medicine cat, Jaypaw," Jayshade continued. "Do you want to train as a warrior with me?" Jaypaw didn't hesitate to answer. "I would love that." Jayshade nodded before walking away. Jaypaw noticed that Sorrelpelt was sleeping. He pricked his ears. He noticed that Stormkit and Cloudkit were playing outside. He decided to bring a feather to them so they can play with it. Jaypaw found a jay feather outside of the medicine den, covered in blood. Jaypaw sniffed it gingerly. Suddenly, the camp erupted into flames. He could already tell that it was a vision. He saw himself, except much taller and leaner, walk through the flames. When Jaypaw looked at the ground, he saw bloody paw prints. A small, silky voice spoke to him. "A jay must choose his own path." Jaypaw watched as he disappeared into the flames, until the only thing he saw left was his tail. Jaypaw blinked, and he noticed that he was back in camp. He decided that he would place the jay feather beside Sorrelpelt's nest so she can see the vision too. He only hoped that would work, so he can become a warrior.
