Chickens are really brutal and because of this, a chicken has passed. She is in a better place now. but it makes me sad because I really miss her and it makes me sad knowing that I will never ever see her again. April 24 Monday - April 25 Tuesday 2023 How did she die? Speedy was a lovely chicken, but everyone already had the idea that it will be soon we will never see her again. She had a Pendulous Crop, when the chickens pouch is too big and it can cause death, suffering, and lots of problems for the poor chicken. We used to have 16 chickens, and recently we had 10. Now we only have 9... it makes me sad knowing that when a chicken has passed on, I count one less chicken when I need to check on them. What is the Pecking Order? Google Information: Hens have their own 'girls' only ladder. The matriarchs of the flock will be up to the top of the ladder, with less dominant birds at the bottom. In this system, the older, stronger, and more savvy hens will be at the top. Young pullets just coming to the point of lay will quickly move up the social ladder. (2021) How do you know what chicken is at the top? Head Hen. The head hen is at the top of the pecking order. This is the dominant hen in the flock. The head hen is not only the boss of the flock, but she is also responsible for the safety of the flock, finding food for the flock, and keeping order within the flock. Lowest Hen: The henpecked chicken is the lowest of the low in the pecking order and thus will get to eat last, drink last and roost last. This bird typically tries to blend in with coop mates while keeping its distance from the top of the flock. This strategy is designed to keep the chicken safe from pecking and possible injury. So why am I bringing up the Pecking Order? Well This is one of the reasons why she passed, or this is what we think is why she passed on. I woke up in the morning, to find the chicken A-OK then started getting ready to go to school, then after school I went to go check on her, and I cried. I thought she was dead. I don't want to give to much detail, but let's just say that it looked like the other hens attacked her so much on the head. If she were to hit her head, ... yeah. That's how bad it was... I cried so much when I saw this, it looked as if she was now... blind. Our guess is that it was the chickens fault. They all attacked her, and for some reason it was only just now. This wasn' the first time something like this has happened though. Last time, a unfortunate hen named Tornado had all the feathers pecked off of her neck, she looked funny but it wasn't something to laugh about at all. This has been happening for a long time, until we moved her into this mini coop with one or two other buddies. I can't really remember at the time. Poor Speedy It has been a couple of days yet I miss her a lot. She was my favorite chicken, and she was so precious. May she rest in peace.
