In 1984, after Nintendo settled on a platforming game rather than a shoot-em-up, they made basic ground, sky, and player sprites, in which one of the game's producers exclaimed that the game looked beautiful unlike any other he's worked on. Most backgrounds were pure black in previous Nintendo titles. At this point in development, most sounds were being re-used from the NES version of the arcade hit, Mario Bros.
