Types of rock: Igneous- When magma cools and hardens, igneous rock forms. These rocks usually are glassy and shiny. There are two types of igneous rocks. Intrusive igneous rocks, which form under the Earth's surface, and Extrusive igneous rocks, which form above the Earth's surface. Examples include, obsidian and basalt. Sedimentary- Sedimentary rocks are formed when sediment (particles of sand, shells, rocks, etc) are condensed into layers over a long period of time. Examples include, conglomerate and limestone. Metamorphic- When heat and pressure occurs under the surface of the Earth, metamorphic rock forms. These rocks usually have ribbon-like layers, and a lot of crystals. Examples include, gneiss and marble.
