EXCERPT: Even in the light of day some cannot be seen. Judy sat on the street, calling to those passing by. Her stomach felt like a gaping hole from the lack of food. All of her attempts had been unsuccessful. She called to the people with blank faces, asking for food, a book, anything. Nobody listened. Judy heard the grating of the morning train in the distance and suddenly stopped calling. She then got up and made a dash for it. ‘Maybe?’ She thought as she finally reached the train, now panting. The train conductor peered out at her, taking notice to her tattered sweater and ripped jeans. Her face looked sour and she had high cheekbones. He pitied her and with a sigh he let Judy on without a word, ushering her into a train car.
