Chapter 24: Castor waited until Mac had sat back down before asking his question. “What was that about?” Mac sighed, and ran a hand through his hair. Something I’d only ever seen Castor do. “My mom runs this hotel. She- she doesn’t know that I’m a demi-god. All she knows is that I was accepted to a camp for crafting careers. Which is kind of the truth?” Castor sat back in his chair. “Dude… even my mom knows. And she’s not exactly my favorite person.” Mac sighed once again. “I know, It’s just… she wouldn’t let me go to camp anymore, and she’d be in danger keeping me so close! I can’t let her get hurt. “ I placed a gentle hand onto his. “I know it’s hard, although I’ve never been through that. It’s up to you, but you might want to tell her one day.” Mac nodded begrudgingly. “Okay. So, have we decided what we’re doing?” Castor nodded. “We’ll take a bus up to the border, sneak, though it’s a stupid idea, and then I’ll call my mom.” Mac raised a skeptical eyebrow. “Sneak past the border?” I nodded. “It’s the only idea we had. So, um, just be prepared to get arrested.” Colleen spoke up, “I had no part in this. If you get arrested, I’m pretending this was a kidnapping.” She laughed afterwards, and we all joined, the stress and tension needing to be broken. “Alright then! Let’s pack up a few things and meet back here in about… thirty minutes?” I asked them, wanting to leave quickly. It’s time this adventure really got started. I ran upstairs with Colleen, a little more than ready to leave this hotel. It was nice, but I was itching to do something again. When we got to our room, I grabbed a small backpack and shoved some clothes into it. Colleen did the same. The guys also had backpacks when we met them at the little table. “You guys ready?” Castor asked, looking each of us in the eye. “Yeah.” I said. “Let’s go do something illegal!” Colleen laughed. “Guess I can cross that off of my bucket list!” I giggled, and Castor grinned. We all walked out of the hotel feeling a little more confident than we probably should have. Maybe then we would have seen what was coming. —-------------------------------------------------------------------------- We stood and stared at the border for a while, each of us not wanting to take another step closer. Cars drove by on the empty road, and most of them glanced at us before moving on. We probably looked weird, with our backpacks, just staring at the border. We stood and stared at the border for a while, each of us not wanting to take another step closer. Cars drove by on the empty road, and most of them glanced at us before moving on. We probably looked weird, with our backpacks, just staring at the border. “Come on, guys! This is going to be an adventure. Something not many people get to do.” He smiled. Then, he tugged us gently forward, towards the border. When we were about ten feet away, the unlucky happened. Three hellhounds and a woman seemed to appear out of nowhere. If you could even call her a woman. She had a long snake tail instead of legs, clawed hands, tangled hair, sharp teeth, and eye sockets that looked unusually deep, and torn. She smiled, showing off her pointed teeth. “Children. I love children. This ought to be fun. Though most of you don’t look like much. Still, I am hungry. And it’s better than nothing.” She snapped her fingers and the dogs ran forward, fighting to be the first to reach us. “Don’t worry,” She called over the noise, her voice like the scales on her body, “They won’t kill you. I get the pleasure. That and a feast. Well, except for you dear,” She paused and pointed at me. “It’s hard to eat immortals. Even if they look as delicious as you.”
I shivered, and clasped Castor’s hand tighter. But only for a moment. Mac pulled out a large hammer, Colleen held a dagger in each hand, Castor a bow and arrow, and I pulled out a sword. The hellhounds snapped their jaws, showcasing their glinting teeth and the meat still stuck between them. I jumped at one of them, stabbing my sword downward. I reached an impressive height, and then the sword sank down in the hound’s neck right to its hilt. The beast whined, trying to shake me off. I tumbled off, rolling on the grainy rocks. Ichor glinted on the area around me. I groaned, “By the olympian gods… why do immortals have to feel pain?” I sat myself up, and tried to find my sword. Great. It was still stabbed into the neck of one of the hellhounds. I wiped a bit of the golden liquid from my forehead, and braced myself. This was about to hurt. I sprinted as fast as I could towards the hound I had stabbed before, and leapt into it, gaining enough force to knock it over. The hellhound growled at the impact, and rolled along the rocks and sand tearing off bits of its flesh and fur. I stood up and winced, looking at my bloodied shoulder. Castor ran up and gently hugged me. “That. Was. Awesome! You basically flew!” He glanced at my shoulder. “Are you okay though?” I nodded, and hugged him back. “How’s everyone else?” I asked. After I made sure they were still alive, I ran after the hellhound to grab my sword, and finish it once and for all. It was clawing at the floor, trying to get up. It actually looked kind of sad. I pulled the sword from its neck quickly, trying to spare it pain. “Goodbye,” I whispered, and I thrust the weapon into its neck, turning it into fading yellow dust. I turned around, and ran back to my friends. Castor, Colleen, and Mac were holding off the two other Hellhounds, while the snake lady watched. I ran at the Hellhound swatting at Castor, and cleanly cut its paw right off. It looked up, as if in shock, and exploded into dust. “Thanks,” Castor panted, “That one was starting to get on my nerve.” He smiled, and I grinned back. Another cloud of yellow dust told us that Colleen and Mac had defeated the third Hellhound. The snake-woman sighed. “How disappointing. I didn’t really want to get up. Ah well. I guess my meal will be well-earned.” She lunged at Colleen, grabbing her in her claws. Colleen shrieked, and tried to kick at her. But, the snake lady held firm, licking her teeth. “Let. Her. Go.” I growled, drawing my sword. She paused for a moment, and slowly began to set Colleen down. Just as quickly, she snatched her up again. “My goodness,” She laughed, “You have powerful charmspeak my dear. It rivals your mothers. And no, I don’t think I will.” She pulled Colleen closer, and began to open her mouth. “You’re forgetting,” I began, smirking, “I’m not just a daughter of Aphrodite.” Although it was hard, because the water was very much under the rocks, I pulled water underneath her like a geyser, shooting her into the sky. Colleen, unfortunately, flew up with her. As they fell, I jumped up, grabbed her, and we tumbled down to the ground, rolling for a few moments. Luckily, I got majority of the scrapes. Sadly, my skin looked in desperate need of band-aids, stitches, etc., and Ichor gushed from a lot of places on my body. Colleen sat up next to me, looking dazed. She glanced at her arm, and scrunched her nose. “Eww! She bit me.” Sure enough, little pinpricks of blood pushed their way out of where the monster’s teeth went in. And, even though she had been shot into the sky, she was still standing, and now going after my boyfriend. She’d better not hurt him. Or the rest of her life was going to be pain without death. I ran back to the fight, trailing golden Ichor after me. Yikes, how bad did I look? Still, I ran/stumbled back to the snake woman. When I reached her, she hissed. “You’ve caused lot’s of problems, immortal. Now, I get my reward.” She dove at Castor and ripped a sickening amount of skin off his shoulder. I didn’t feel myself scream. I didn’t hear it either. Castor fell to the ground in what felt like slow motion, and my blood turned hot, coursing through me. Somehow, I was right next to her, though I had been several feet away mere seconds ago. Her eyes opened wide in shock as I stabbed her. Even after she fell, and stabbed her over and over again, feeling the tears stream down my cheeks. Hearing my ragged breath. She burst into gold dust, making my sword fall and my body collapse. I sobbed into the dust, letting it run through my fingers. I let myself be picked up by Mac, and thrown across his shoulders. Blackness was starting to seep in, and exhaustion take over. And I let it, turning the world into a black nightmare.
