After Storm took off, I remembered that I had Dragon a Training class to finish. I checked my watch, and noticed that when I’d get to the courtyard, I’d only be in class for 5 minutes. So, I did what anyone would’ve done; I skipped the rest of class. Of course, I got scolded by Matt for doing that. “What the heck, man?!” He’d said at dinner in the café. “I had to partner up with FIREBALL for the rest of that. FIREBALL! Not Shrub, not Nix, not Zarya. FIREBALL.” “You mean the kid with crazy red hair and those demonic red eyes? He’s so bad at Dragon Training.” I said with my mouth full of spaghetti. It tasted like burnt rubber and sand. I spit it out immediately. “I KNOW. Why do you think I hate working with them?!” “Well, you don’t hate working with Nix.” I remarked, remembering when he’d actually volunteered to partner with the most try-hard emo girl in the school. “That’s… for my own reasons.” We left it at that. We went back to our dorm to chat for a while, when w heard knocking on the door. “Ooh, ooh! I’ve got it!” Matt whispered. “WHO IS IT? I’M NOT DECENT!” He cried shrilly. “Oh, you little- -“ started a voice that I’d recognize for the rest of my life. Storm had ACTUALLY come to see us. She kicked in the dorm, and we saw Storm almost blowing out steam from her ears. We also saw another kid we’d seen around but never talked to. I racked my head to try and remember their name… it came out very stupid. “Hey, Storm! Hey, Tornado!” I said stupidly. The kid I didn’t know slapped his forehead. “It’s Hurricane, Dimond.” they corrected. “I wasn’t that far off, right?” I assumed. “OK, y’all. Listen up; Hurricane here is showing me around. I’m gonna find my dorm, and get gone.” Storm said enthusiastically. “Wait a second. But… you’re a demigirl! Where’s the demigirl dorms?” Matt asked, hanging off the couch like a bat. “The academy has demigender dorms. And paragender. And non-binary. And agender- -” Hurricane started listing all the types of dorms. “OK, can it. Let’s move; I’m tired, and my ankle is killing me.” Storm said, shoving Hurricane away. I noticed the cast on Storm’s ankle just before she slammed the door shut. I shrugged it off, and went to the bathroom to change into PJ’s. After we got settled into bed, we did our nightly ritual; as in, we stayed up and talked until one in the morning. We started talking about how our day sucked in a thousand ways, then we got to the point where we were rating the people at the academy. “OK, OK. What about… ooh! Nix, Fang and Viper?” Matt said, chuckling. “Oh, easy! Nix is a 2, Fang is a 5, and Viper is a 3.” I concluded, not hesitating one bit. “Really? I think Nix is an 8, Fang is a 3, and Viper is a 6.” Matt said, tapping his temples. “What?! You LIKE Nix? Nix is, like, the most try-hard emo kid EVER!” I screeched in objection. “Well, I mean, she’s kinda cute… just saying…” he started. “NIX IS SO ANNOYING- - wait, you LIKE LIKE her? Oh, jeez, Matt!” “She’s not that bad when you get to know her!” “YOU’VE ONLY PARTNERED WITH HER IN DRAGON TRAINING!” “WE WERE PARTNERS FOR THE WHOLE FIRST HALF OF THE YEAR!” “Ugh, WHATEVER. Fine. Goodnight, Matthew.” I said, rolling over. It was just too weird to think. Nix and Matt. Matt and Nix.
