CLICK OR PRESS SPACE First I started by introducing her to a saddle pad. To do this, I let her sniff it and then inched forward to make it touch her. She didn’t like this at first and backed up. However, she warmed up to it pretty quickly after that and allowed me to place it on her back. I put it on, held it there for a second, then took it off. I repeated this multiple times, each time increasing the amount of time I held it on her back. Then I gave her a treat. Next up was the saddle. I used the same process that I had used for the saddle pad and she didn’t object much to it. The most she did was pin her ears, snort, and paw at the ground. I gave her a treat again once she settled. Then, to get Chippy used to the feel of the saddle while she’s moving, I lunged her for a few minutes. She did great and seemed to not even notice that the saddle was there. After that I introduced the bridle. She didn’t particularly seem to like it, but she tolerated it and allowed me to lead her to the mounting block. Finally I put my foot in the stirrup and jumped up a a few times and laid across her back to get her used to the weight of a rider. Overall, she did wonderful and I’m looking forward to our next training session.
