This is a learning activity for evaluating algebraic expressions using Scratch. Nothing happens when you click the flag. You must click "See Inside" and follow the instructions in the comments. You will need to minimize the stage if using this activity on an iPad.
Prerequisite knowledge: basic events, operator blocks (simple calculation and join, setter vs reporter blocks, and an introduction to custom variables. Teacher Note: When building this activity as a Parson's Problem I tried to organize the blocks for level 1 in somewhat of the order they would be used and with regard for PEMDAS. This activity could be used as a pair programming activity to encourage mathematical dialogue between students. Teachers might want to add a level 2 sprite to this activity for an optional challenge for those who finish early. The first When I receive block should hide everything from level 1 and show the sprite and variables for level 2. Shout out to the Brilliant app for the visual math inspiration.
